School Year 2023-24

February 28, 2024 Minutes

The February 28, 2024 meeting of the Dare County Unit of North Carolina Retired School Personnel was held at Mulligan’s in Nags Head.  Thirteen members and guests were in attendance.  President Juli Perkins opened the meeting with a welcome to the membership.

 

  1. Meeting Opening. 

    1.  Juli Perkins introduced the “Info Share Part 2”.  Members shared community involvement opportunities and helpful information.  For specifics, see notes at the end of the minutes.

    2. A thank-you note for our donation to KDH Library in memory of Bill Wadsworth was received from Sylvia Wadsworth.   She hopes to see us soon!

  2. Treasurer’s Report.  The treasurer’s report was made by Carol Sparks and is found in a separate attachment.

 

    3. Committee Reports

  1. Legislative.  Barbara Hardy (shared by Juli Perkins)

    1.  Dare Democrats hosted a Democratic candidate night this week in Nags Head. 

    2. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, March 5, 2024.  Early voting will continue until the Saturday before Election Day (3/2/24).  Polls close at 3:00 on Saturday.

  2.  Community Service.  Linda Foster.  Keep up with volunteer hours

 

  1.  Scholarship.  Mary Blythe reported that 4 of the 5 scholarships awarded by DCNCRSP had been sent.  We are waiting on information from the 5th winner.  2024-2025 Scholarship packets are expected from each school soon.  Interviews will follow and Mary will keep us posted.

  1. Region 7A Business. The NCRSP Convention will be held on March 20-21 at The Embassy Suites in Cary.  Juli Perkins, Francine Kennedy and Connie Outten will represent Dare County via Zoom.

 

  1. Other. 

    1.  

      Info Share Part 2

       Barbara White:  The local Montessori School needs teachers.  Hopefully, the director will be able to come to one of our meetings to share more information.
    2.  Barbara White:  The Community Spelling Bee (DKG) will be held on March 18, 2024 at Kitty Hawk School from 6-8.  Come out and cheer on our team, Feathered Friends, (Barbara White, Francine Kennedy, Pam Lucas, and Carol Sparks)!.  All funds go to scholarships.

    3.  Becky Strickland:  CPR Class is being offered on March 11 from 4-6.  The Kitty Hawk Fire Department will provide instruction.  The class will be held at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, 803 W. Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk.  Please bring a yoga mat or towel for floor work. Call Becky Strickland if you would like to participate (252-202-2056).

    4.  Linda Foster:  Used Sneaker Program, “GotSneakers?”.  Bring old sneakers to the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center.  The old sneakers are recycled and repurposed into tracks and playground surfaces.  This is a fundraiser for Dare County Flyers Special Olympic Cheerleading Team. Funds help the young ladies with expenses as they travel to compete.  For more information about the fundraiser, contact the Virginia Tillett Center, 252-475-9272.

    5.  Jo Voigt:  Plastic bags and coverings are collected and turned into benches by  NexTrex ,  You can bring plastic bags and clean food coverings (see attachment for details) OUTSIDE the Baum center on Wednesdays 9-10:30 or KDH Library anytime.

    6.  Connie Outten:  Zoom Yoga classes are provided by Anne Howard on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10:00 AM.  The cost of each class is $12.00, paid by Venmo to Anne.  These are classes for any level.  If interested, contact Connie Outten, cobx57@gmail.com or contact Jessica Loose.  

    7.  Sue Kelly:  Trash Attack community cleanup will be held on March 23rd.  Come out for a fun day in Kill Devil Hills, starting at Aviation Park 9-12.   1. Raffle Drawing.  

    1.  Thank you to Carol Sparks for conducting another lively raffle this month.  All proceeds from the raffle go to our scholarship fund.  This year we awarded 5 scholarships. Carol is retiring from the Raffle Drawing business and is looking for a replacement.  If you are interested, she has her secret list of donors that she will share!

Holiday Meeting

December 6, 2023

 

 

The December 6, 2023 meeting of the Dare County Unit of North Carolina Retired School Personnel was held at 3 Tequilas Restaurant. Twenty members and their guests were in attendance. President Juli Perkins opened the meeting with a welcome to the membership.

Linda Foster recognized Becky Strickland for being the first member to turn in her Volunteer Recording sheet. She took care of business by texting her form. Way to go, Becky!

Jessica Loose was our 2022 Volunteer of the Year, with 403 hours of service

Francine Kennedy recognized new members as of July 2023: Jackie Bunn, Judith Fearing, and Karen Head. Welcome!

Juli Perkins gave kudos to Sue Ward who diligently submitted DCNCRSP to the Coastland Times over the years and succeeded! Thank you, Sue!

  • Guest Speaker 

Francine Kennedy introduced our guest speaker, Tamara Warren, of Monarch Elder concierge Service. Ms Warren provides support to seniors, helping them age in place with dignity and independence. For more information, call Monarch Elder Concierge Service 757-957-2229. Services include:

-care to those recovering from surgery as they transition back to their homes

-companionship

-meal prep

-light housework/yardwork

-help with medical appointments/transportation

-running errands

-pet care

-socialization

-assist with daily exercise/hygiene/med tray prep

-organize/rearrange home to fit needs of client

-connect client with reputable services for hire (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, drivers, realtors, dentists, hospice care, physical therapists, etc)

 

  • Other Causes

North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children (NCRSP Charitable Arm) continues to provide eye exams, new glasses, school supplies/book bags, dental care (sometimes for the first time in a child’s life), and coats/shoes. Any school employee can refer a child for these services. NCRSP is a major supporter of NFPSC. Funds are much appreciated. Donations can be made by check to:

  • December Project 

Area Food Pantries. Maureen King collected and counted donations. Donated food was delivered to local pantries. A total of $1000 was collected.

 

 

  • Raffle Drawing

Carol Sparks. Thanks to Carol, we enjoyed a great, end-of-year raffle. If you know a business that would like to donate to the raffle, let Carol know!

 

  • Other Points of Interest:

Judith Fearing is interested in job-sharing a substitute teaching position in a Kindergarten classroom. If interested, contact Judith.
