The Dare County Unit of North Carolina Retired School Personnel was in a quandary: although our group is relatively small, we were at a crossroads at how to give a BIG thanks to all of this year’s teaching and secretarial staff, cafeteria workers, school bus drivers and those who directed Dare County Schools. We would have liked to have done what Oprah was able to do, with “You get a car and you get a car!” However, that wouldn’t have been feasible, because as “rich” as we feel in retirement, our pocketbooks are NOT rich. Therefore, our idea was one that had been important to all of us in our teaching years: digging into a bowl of Sweet Treats! This would serve every staff member that performed in our schools, in this very difficult year for many school teachers. Each bowl or bag had a note attached to it, saying “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” (Aristotle); “Our fingerprints don't fade from the ones we touch,” (Judy Bloom); or “It is not what is poured into the student, but what is planted, that counts,” (E.P. Bertin). And each of these sayings is true!
